My Fav Indian Sweet Recipes
I’m married to an Indian man who shares my sweet tooth, and we have explored India and Indian restaurants + sweet shops worldwide sampling the goodies.
I’ve finally put together a collection of my favorite Indian sweet recipes.
I’m talking about authentic Indian treats you can make at home like a pro. And most of them are super easy!
Start an aromatic pot of my mother-in-law’s authentic indian tea and get ready to become obsessed with these popular Indian recipes.
Gulab Jamun (Dumplings in Syrup)
Here is an easy recipe for pillowy-soft gulab jamun. Such a delicious dessert!
These indulgent milk dumplings are made with milk powder and all purpose flour. They’re quickly deep-fried and then steeped in spiced syrup. The mouth texture is meltingly tender and are a quintessential treat for celebrations and festivals in India.
All you need is 20 min to prep and 15 minutes to cook. Let’s go! Your family will not stop asking these!
Rasgulla Recipe
Grab this recipe from Munaty Cooking! It’s a real treat, I tell ya.
These are essentially soft, spongy balls made from paneer (Indian cottage cheese) and soaked in sugar syrup.
They are also a super popular Indian dessert. Rosogolla, as Bengali people pronounce it, is a must-try, so get on it! It doesn’t contain wheat, making it a perfect treat if you’re gluten free.
Jalebi
Here is a recipe from Novie Housewife to whip up. Kids love these for their super sweet taste.
Jalebi are light and crispy little syrupy spirals of deep-fried rice and wheat flour batter soaked in golden-hued sugar syrup. They are a timeless Indian street food with a crunchy texture.
It’s a popular dessert at Indian buffets and uses surprisingly basic ingredients.
Halwa (Gajar ka Halwa, Sooji Halwa)
What can be prettier than these halwa by Tea For Turmeric?
Halwa is a seriously comforting Indian pudding-like dessert crafted from semolina, lovingly simmered in milk, ghee, and sugar. Halwa is sometimes made with carrots – aka carrot halwa.
This recipe makes halwa in 20 minutes with only 5 ingredients. No Diwali is complete without them! Other halwa recipes to try are moong dal halwa. These are some of the MOST popular Indian desserts.
Peda
Check out this recipe for peda from Sanjana Feasts – guys, it’s too good.
These delights are velvety soft and sort of fudge-like sweets. I love how meticulously crafted they are – think condensed milk, sugar, and aromatic cardamom. So YUMMY!
Sandesh
Here’s a recipe for sandesh from Whisk Affair that I am in love with.
Dive into the delicate flavors of Bengal with these soft, milky delights made from fresh paneer. These sweet teats have an edge of luxury from the saffron. Rose water is often used as an alternative to saffron to gently flavor with.
Mysore Pak
This recipe from Curry Trail can be whipped up in 5 minutes and in the microwave. Super easy and convenient if you have little time.
I adore the opulence of these rich sweet treats. They are crafted from gram flour, ghee, and sugar – put them on your list, friends!
Rasmalai
Grab this recipe from Cook with Manali!
This recipe makes velvety soft paneer dumplings. They sit steeped in a pool of sweetened, thickened milk. This is infused with cardamom and saffron – its honestly a sublime dessert.
Kulfi Ice-Cream
How luscious does this recipe for kulfi ice cream from A Spicy Perspective look? Great for all your special occasions – serve it in a little cone or pretty glass bowl.
It’s a no-churn recipe with pistachios, cardamon, and saffron.
Perfect to satisfy cravings for something cooling after a spicy Indian meal. I have a mango kulfi variation I love!
Coconut Burfi
This recipe from Aromatic Essence has two methods – one with condensed milk and one without.
I can’t even deal with how pretty these are. Make them for Valentine’s day, pack them into a giftbox, or serve them as dessert!
Gajar ki Barfi
Try this recipe from Spice Up the Curry.
Try the blend of flavors in this delectable barfi. I love that they are crafted from grated carrots, khoya, and sugar. The flavors are utterly delicious.
Kaju Katli
Grab this recipe from Spoon Fork and Food. Guys, talk about Pinterest worthy! Made in just 40 minutes and with only 5 ingredients – these look pro but are pretty easy to make.
Kalakand
This recipe from My Heart Beets is an absolute must. Kalakand or Milk Cake as its affectionately known is an Indian delight.
Made with 6 ingredients, the cardamon and pistachios flavor the subtle ricotta cheese and milk powder beautifully.
Malpua
Here is a delicious recipe from My Food Story!
These sweet pancakes are made from flour, milk, and sugar, lovingly deep-fried and drenched in luscious sugar syrup.
Coconut Ladoo
Here is another beautiful recipe from Spoon, Fork and Food! A delicious Indian mithai.
These laddoo are bite-sized treats crafted from fresh or desiccated coconut, condensed milk, and aromatic cardamom. They are popular at weddings and are also gluten-free.
What is Mithai?
“Mithai” is the Hindi word for sweets or confections, made from a variety of ingredients like milk, flour, sugar or jaggery, nuts, and spices. Mithai is deeply integrated into Indian festivities, and rituals, including religious ceremonies, festivals like Diwali and Holi, and life events such as weddings and birthdays. More on the cultural significance of Indian confectionary here.
