I love making this easy flatbread pizza when I have nothing in the fridge, but I do have flatbread (like garlic naan, pita, turkish bread, etc.) in the freezer. I always have a jar of pizza sauce in the pantry. Kid-friendly lunch or dinner – presto!

If you want to go a little with your own homemade flatbread, use my butter naan for the base – (check out my naan pizza!) You can also make my homemade pizza sauce and keep the rest in the fridge for later.

I’m obsessed with quick and easy flatbread pizza:

  • Quick to make: No dough-rising time required like with homemade pizza dough!
  • Crispy texture: The thin crust bakes up crispy and light.
  • Perfect for creative toppings: Flatbreads can handle a wide variety of toppings, from margherita flatbread pizza with classic tomato and cheese (like my air fryer pizza) to unique combos like seafood pizza, butter chicken pizza, or fig and prosciutto or arugula and balsamic vinegar glaze.

Here’s What You Need

You won’t need much to make this recipe – just a couple of basic ingredients and tools:

Flatbread Pizza Ingredients

Sauce on Flatbread Pizza Bread

You can use store-bought ingredients or make the key elements from scratch:

  • Flatbread: Use homemade naan or any storebought flatbread, each about 8 inches, as the perfect, easy pizza base.
  • Red pizza sauce: I love this rich, homemade red pizza sauce recipe, but you could use a ready-made sauce. I also love this cream based white pizza sauce I used on that shrimp pizza recipe.
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese: Keep it simple and ultra-easy with fresh mozzarella cheese.
  • Olive oil
  • Pizza topping ideas: Pepperoni, red peppers, mushrooms, black olives, pineapple, ham, red onion, etc.
  • Fresh basil optional: For some bright, herby goodness.

Substitutions and Variations

Use alternative ingredients if you need to. This recipe is incredibly adaptable;

  • Flatbread or naan: Use pita bread or even tortilla wraps if flatbread or naan bread isn’t available. For a gluten-free option, try using gluten-free flatbread or a cauliflower crust -you could also use regular pizza dough!
  • Red pizza sauce: Swap the red pizza sauce with pesto, marinara sauce, alfredo sauce, or a garlic butter base for a different flavor profile. Blend fresh herbs into a simple tomato sauce for a fresh sauce.
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese: Use any other melty cheese like cheddar, provolone, parmesan cheese, or a dairy-free or vegan cheese alternative. Try a blend of cheeses like a mix of mozzarella, gouda, and parmesan for a richer taste.
  • Avocado oil: Olive or coconut oil can be used instead of avocado oil. Brush the flatbread with garlic-infused oil or herbed olive oil for extra flavor.
  • Pizza toppings: Use any vegetables (spinach, zucchini, cherry tomatoes) or proteins (chicken, bacon, sausage) as toppings. For a vegetarian version, add a variety of roasted veggies like eggplant, arugula, or sun-dried tomatoes.
  • Fresh basil: Try fresh arugula, oregano, or thyme as a garnish for an herbal finish. For added texture and flavor, drizzle with balsamic glaze after baking.

Tools to Grab

You’ll just need a baking sheet to cook the flatbread on.

How to Make this Homemade Flatbread Pizza Recipe: An Easy Guide

Here are the simple steps to making your homemade pizza:

Adding cheese to naan pizza.

Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the flatbreads: Place the flatbreads on the prepared baking sheet. Lightly spray each one with olive oil or avocado oil.

Add the sauce: Spread 2 tablespoons of pizza sauce onto each flatbread, leaving a small border around the edges.

Top with cheese: Sprinkle 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella evenly over the sauce on each flatbread.

Add your toppings: Customize with your choice of pizza toppings, such as pepperoni, veggies, a little salt, and any other favorites.

Bake: Place the flatbreads in the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Garnish and serve: Remove from the oven and top with fresh basil leaves, if you like.

5 Common Mistakes When Making Flatbread Pizza

These are a few common trip-ups to avoid with this recipe (don’t worry, it’s simple enough):

  1. Overloading with sauce: Adding too much sauce can lead to a soggy base that doesn’t hold up well when sliced. Use just enough to lightly coat the flatbread, leaving a small border to avoid sogginess.
  2. Skipping the oil spray: Lightly spraying or brushing the flatbread with oil before adding toppings helps create a crispier, golden crust. Skipping this step can leave your base too soft and lack the crunch you expect in a great pizza.
  3. Adding too wet toppings: Vegetables like mushrooms or tomatoes release water as they cook, which can make the pizza soggy. Pat toppings dry with a paper towel or pre-cook them slightly to avoid excess moisture.
  4. Using cold flatbread: If the flatbread is refrigerated, let it come to room temperature before assembling your pizza. Cold flatbread can cook unevenly, leaving the center undercooked while the edges crisp up too quickly.
  5. Baking at a low temperature: Baking at too low of a temperature won’t give you that bubbling, melted cheese and crispy crust. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) or higher for the best results.

Make Ahead and Storage

Assemble the flatbread pizzas up to a day in advance by spreading the sauce, cheese, and toppings onto the flatbread, then cover tightly with plastic wrap or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

When ready to bake, allow them to come to room temperature for about 10-15 minutes, then pop them into the oven as directed.

Store leftover flatbread pizza in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, bake in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5-7 minutes or until warmed through and the crust is crisp again. Or here’s how to reheat pizza in the air fryer (perfectly!).

Avoid microwaving, as it can make the crust soggy.

Final Notes, Pro Tips + Science-Based Secrets

Here are some of my top tips for getting incredible homemade pizza with flatbread:

  • Preheat Your baking sheet: For an extra crispy crust, preheat the baking sheet before placing your flatbread on it. This helps the base cook quickly and evenly, avoiding sogginess.
  • Use fresh cheese: Freshly shredded cheese melts better than pre-shredded, giving a smoother, more luxurious texture. If you can, shred your mozzarella or other cheeses yourself.
  • Don’t overload with toppings: Less is more! Stick to a few key toppings to prevent the pizza from becoming heavy or watery. This also allows each topping to shine and cook thoroughly.
  • Experiment with sauces: Try mixing up your base sauces for variety—pesto, barbecue, garlic butter, or even alfredo sauce.
  • Finish with fresh ingredients: For a burst of freshness, add ingredients like basil, arugula, or a drizzle of balsamic glaze right after baking.
