This Avocado Crema recipe is a creamy, tangy avocado sauce made from pureed avocados, sour cream or yogurt, lime juice, and seasonings such as salt, pepper, and cilantro.

You’re gonna love how amazing it tastes as a topping or dip for spicy fish tacos, quesadillas, ground beef burritos, grilled meats, authentic mexican ground beef tacosslow cooker shredded chicken tacos and more.

And don’t stop there! Avocado crema is a versatile condiment beyond Mexican recipes: it’s also delicious as a dressing for salads, drizzled over grain bowls, as a sauce for these moist salmon burgers, on your air fryer turkey burgers or air fryer tuna steaks, and even on your microwave poached eggs for a healthier eggs benny in place of hollandaise sauce.

Why You’ll LOVE This Avocado Crema Recipe

  • So delicious: I adore this avocado crema recipe. It’s creamy, tangy, bright, cool and so deliciously satisfying.
  • Nutritious and naturally gluten-free: Packed with healthy fats from the avocado and protein from Greek yogurt, this is one healthy little avocado sauce.
  • Versatile: Avocado crema is perfect for drizzling over fish tacos, pouring over a crisp salad, lashing on top of a hearty grain bowl, or as a gorgeous dip alongside raw veggies (and if you love creamy Mexican sauces, you must also try this delicious Cilantro Lime Crema)..

Gather the Ingredients for this Easy Avocado Crema Recipe

  • A large, ripe avocado
  • Full-fat Greek yogurt (nonfat has a chalky texture and is too sour)
  • Lime juice (and because we’re blending it, you can just peel it and blend the whole fruit in the blender!)
  • Avocado oil* (just to keep with the theme, but any neutral oil will do, like canola, sunflower, safflower, or a not-fancy olive oil).
  • Salt

*The oil thins the dressing but also serves to balance the crema’s flavour overall. I love a good, bright, limey dressing, but in order to keep it from being sour, you need enough fat to soften the edges.

How To Make Avocado Crema

  1. Place avocado, yogurt, peeled lime, oil and salt in a small blender or mini food processor.
  2. Start blender on low speed and gradually increase to high speed, pausing blender and scraping down sides as needed to keep the food moving through the blades.

The final consistency of the dressing will depend on how much liquid you add. The base recipe below yields the sour cream ranch-y texture you see pictured in the two images below.

Tasty Variations and Substitutions on this Avocado Crema Recipe

  • Avocado dressing: For a thinner cream to serve as a salad dressing or avocado vinaigrette, use a total of 8 tbsp oil, 1 1/2 limes, 4 tbsp water and 1 1/4 tsp kosher salt. OR simply substitute the yogurt for buttermilk or heavy cream. Feel free to add some fresh cilantro for an avocado cilantro dressing.
  • Vegan avocado crema: Swap in plain plant-based yogurt for the greek yogurt to make a dairy-free version.
  • Garlick-y lemon avocado cream sauce: Add a clove of garlic to the blender and swap the lime for lemon juice.

Use It Up! How to serve your Avocado Crema.

• Tacos: Add dollops of avocado crema to tacos for a creamy and flavorful topping for ground beef tacos or slow cooker chicken tacos.

• Quesadillas: Use as a dip for quesadillas, or spread it on the tortilla before adding your favorite fillings.

• Grilled Meats: Spoon avocado crema over grilled chicken or steak for added creaminess.

• Chips & Veggies: Dip crunchy tortilla chips and raw vegetables in this delicious sauce as a drippy version of guacamole.

• Nachos: Pile your favorite game-day nachos recipes high and drizzle with a generous lashing of avocado crema. It would be delicious on tostadas, too.

• Burgers & Sandwiches: Take your air fryer turkey burgers to the next level by adding a spoonful of avocado crema.

• Fish: this sauce makes an excellent topping for any type of fish. I love it over seared ahi tuna in a poke-type bowl using this air fryer tuna steaks recipe. It’s delicious to brighten up simple grilled salmon. You could even serve it with my almost-famous crispy potato fish cakes with cod as an alternative to ketchup.

• Burritos: Drizzle on burritos (like these convenient freezer burritos) for an extra boost of flavor. It would be great on burrito bowls, too. Actually, crema is great with most Mexican recipes.

• Fries: use as a dip for Crisp Yam Fries or baked Butternut Squash Fries.

Make Ahead and Storage Instructions

Effortless Prep: blend it up ahead of time will make for a seamless mealtime with minimal effort.

Store for Later: This crema can be stored in an airtight container and enjoyed up to three days later.

How long will avocado crema keep?

Avocado crema can be kept in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to three days. The colour will likely change as the avocado oxidizes but it is still perfectly safe and delicious. Give the crema a quick stir before serving.
