How to Make Air Fryer Boneless Chicken Thighs: An Easy Guide

Prepping Your Chicken

Begin by preparing the chicken and making the seasoning mixture. Mix paprika, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and brown sugar in a large bowl. Stir in olive oil to form a paste. (You could alternatively use avocado or olive oil spray)

Coat the chicken thighs evenly with this mixture, ensuring each piece is well covered.

Air Frying the Chicken

Next, cook the chicken:

  • Preheat your air fryer to 390ºF.
  • Place boneless thighs in the basket, avoiding overcrowding. You’ll need to work in batches if making more than 4. Cook them for about 18 minutes.
  • Remember to flip the thighs with a fork halfway through to ensure they cook evenly on both sides.

Checking for Doneness

  • Use an instant-read thermometer to confirm the internal temperature has reached 165°F (74°C).

The chicken should also have a nice, crispy exterior.

How long do boneless, skinless chicken thighs take in the air fryer?

  • Most batches take 16–20 minutes. Thickness, spacing, and model affect time. Flip halfway and rely on temperature: 165°F minimum, 175–185°F for ultra-tender thighs.

Resting

  • Once your chicken is cooked, let it rest for a few minutes.
  • Trust me, this makes a huge difference to making the chicken more juicy.

How to Serve This Air Fryer Boneless Chicken Thighs Recipe

This is one of my go-to healthy chicken recipes and my favorite way to the crispy chicken thighs is as a meal prep lunch option. I slice the cooked chicken thighs, freeze them in individual portions, and reheat before serving.

Here are some great ways to enjoy them:

  • As a Main Dish: Pair them with side dishes like mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, a fresh salad, or a simple pasta dish.
  • In Sandwiches or Wraps: Slice the chicken thighs and tuck them into sandwiches or wraps. Add lettuce, tomato, and your favorite sauce for a quick and delicious lunch.
  • In Salads: Chop the chicken and add it to a couscous salad with lemon dressing for a protein-packed lunch or dinner.
  • In Grain Bowls: Slice or shred the chicken and add it to a bowl with grains like rice or quinoa, along with vegetables and a tasty dressing.

Make Ahead and Storage

  • Making Ahead: You can marinate the chicken thighs in the spice mixture and store them in the refrigerator overnight. This enhances the flavors and saves you prep time on busy days.
  • Refrigerating: Cooked chicken thighs can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Ensure they are cooled to room temperature before storing.
  • Freezing: For longer storage, freeze the cooked chicken thighs in a sealed container or freezer bag. They can be stored frozen for up to 3 months. (RELATED: how to defrost chicken air fryer method)
  • Reheating: Reheat the chicken in the air fryer or oven until thoroughly warmed. This helps retain the texture better than microwaving. If frozen, ensure they are fully thawed before reheating.

3 Most Common Mistakes When Making Air Fryer Chicken Recipes

Here are the most frequent mix-ups to avoid when making Air Fryer Boneless Chicken Thighs:

  1. Overcrowding the Air Fryer: This prevents the chicken from cooking evenly and achieving that desirable crispy texture.
  2. Not Flipping the Chicken: Failing to flip the chicken thighs halfway through cooking can result in one side being overcooked or undercooked.
  3. Ignoring Internal Temperature: The best way to check if your chicken is done is by using a meat thermometer. Chicken should always reach a minimum internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) for safety
    • PRO TIP 🔥: Dark meat chicken (like thighs and drumsticks) will become fall-apart tender instead of bouncy/rubbery if you let it get to an internal temperature of 175 to 185ºF.

FAQs About Air Fryer Boneless Chicken Thighs

What is the difference between cooking boneless, skinless chicken thighs and breasts in an air fryer? Is one method more effective than the other?

Thighs have more fat and connective tissue, so they stay juicy and tolerate higher heat without drying. Chicken breast is leaner and cooks faster. Use 380–400°F for thighs (finish 175–185°F for tender texture) and 360–380°F for breasts (pull at 160–165°F). Here’s how to cook frozen chicken breasts in the air fryer.

What temperature should I air fry boneless chicken thighs?

The temperature range between 375–400°F works best for boneless, skinless thighs. The sweet spot is 390°F for even browning and juicy centers. Cook to at least 165°F, but thighs are most tender around 175–185°F.

How long to air fry boneless chicken thighs at 380°F?

About 16–20 minutes depending on thickness and your model. Flip at 8–10 minutes. Verify doneness with an instant-read thermometer; target 175–185°F for best texture.

How long to air fry boneless chicken thighs at 390°F?

Generally 16–18 minutes, flipping halfway. Smaller/thinner pieces can be done closer to 14–16 minutes; thicker pieces may need up to 20. Cook to 175–185°F.

How long to air fry boneless chicken thighs at 400°F?

Plan on 14–17 minutes, flipping once. High heat browns quickly, so start checking early. Always confirm 165°F minimum; 175–185°F yields softer, shreddable thighs.

Can I air fry boneless chicken thighs for meal prepping?

Yes. Cook, cool, and refrigerate up to 3 days or freeze up to 3 months. Slice or shred for bowls and salads. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 3–5 minutes (thawed) to revive the edges without drying.

Can you air fry drumsticks at 400°F?

Absolutely. Season and cook at 400°F for about 18–22 minutes, flipping once. Drumsticks are best at 175–185°F at the thickest point for juicy meat that pulls from the bone.

How long to cook leg quarters in an air fryer at 400°F?

Expect 22–28 minutes depending on size and basket capacity. Cook skin side down first for 10–12 minutes, flip to finish crisping. Confirm 175–185°F in the thigh near the bone.

  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 boneless skinless chicken thighs

Instructions

  • Start by mixing paprika, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and brown sugar in a bowl. Add olive oil to the mix to create a paste. Coat the chicken thighs evenly with the spice mixture, ensuring each piece is well covered. Let the chicken marinate for a few minutes for the flavors to meld.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (193°C). Place the chicken thighs in the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Cook the thighs for about 16-20 minutes. Halfway through the cooking time, flip the thighs to ensure even cooking and browning.
  • The chicken is fall-apart tender when it reaches an internal temperature of 175-185°F and has a nice, crispy exterior. Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving to allow the juices to redistribute.

This is a really delicious recipe. I mixed all the ingredients and threw the chicken spice mixture in a bowl to thoroughly cover before placing it in the air fryer. I did about half the amount of cayenne, and it still had a kick. Just the right amount of spice for us. Thank you!

About how big should each chicken thigh be? I noticed you suggested only using 4 at a time, but just trying to understand the scale of each thigh?

I have a question – can the oven type of air-fryer be used to make these recipes? They sure do look delicious and would love to try them. Thank you.

    1. Jennifer Pallian BSc, RD says:

Yes they can but I haven’t found the oven-type air fryers get food as crispy! Will still be delish though.

I just put this in the air fryer! I’m excited to try it. It smells delicious!

The only thing was the amount of ingredients mixed to coat the chicken with is not nearly enough to 4 chicken thighs. I had to double the ingredients which is fine! Just wanted to let some know when they try this!

    1. Jennifer Pallian BSc, RD says:

Interesting, I never have that problem! Let me know how they turned out. I don’t think I’d double the salt unless your 4 thighs are very large!

Quick and easy. Seasoning gave chicken a great flavor. Will definitely make it again. May shorten time in air fryer by a couple of minutes.

Absolutely spot-on! You are the first person I have seen who said to “OVER”cook the chicken thighs in the air fryer for them to be tender. I have experimented with a dozen techniques, and every single time, they turned out rubbery and chewy. This time, they were perfect! Typically, I always temped the chicken thighs carefully with an instant-read thermometer and took them out at 165°. This time, I let them continue cooking all the way to 185°.

I cooked them in my double-basket Ninja air fryer at 390° for 18 minutes, flipping halfway through, then rested for 5 minutes. Perfect!! Also, the addition of brown sugar to the spice rub was the secret ingredient for caramelization. Thank you so much!

This is the first air fryer chicken recipe I’ve tried. At the time I was looking for something fast as we didn’t have time to marinade. This was incredibly quick and the results were impressive. The family and I thought it turned out fantastic. We’re trying it again tonight with a side of wild rice and a salad.
