Below are 2 sets of instructions, depending on whether the specific model of your appliance has a preheat function or not.
Easy Guide for Preheating:
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions: Always refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines or user manual for specific preheating instructions tailored to your air fryer model. I know—for some of us, this is our worst nightmare, but it’s worth it.
- Stable placement: Position it on a stable, heat-resistant surface with plenty of space around it for ventilation.
- Plug in and power on: Connect your air fryer to a compatible power outlet and switch it on; let’s go!
- Temperature and time setting: Use the control panel to set the desired temperature. Refer to recipes or general guidelines for recommended preheating temperatures, typically ranging between 350°F to 400°F (175°C to 200°C).
- Allow time for preheating process: Let your air fryer preheat empty for approximately 3-5 minutes. If you like to line your air fryer basket with parchment paper for easy clean-up (see: everything to know for a clean air fryer), wait until after it is finished preheating. Without food to weigh it down, hot air may blow the parchment on to the elements and cause it to scorch or catch fire.
- Monitor the progress: Monitor the digital display to ensure that the air fryer reaches the set preheating temperature. Some models make a signal or beep to indicate when preheating is done!
- Add your food: Once preheated, carefully open the basket or tray and add your food in a single layer.
- Start cooking: Close the air fryer basket or tray and set the cooking time according to your recipe or preferences. Monitor from time to time to ensure even cooking.
NOTE: A recipe’s cooking time starts from after the air fryer is preheated (which is why it should be preheated empty).

Well, that depends. There are times when its key to a great result and other times when its not really important.

It can reduce the time food spends in the fryer, preventing it from drying out.
Without preheating, food may cook unevenly, leading to a drier texture on the outer parts, especially for meats or items that need a crisp exterior while staying moist inside.

I preheat my air fryer:
- To air fry foods that really need even cooking: Preheating ensures that your air fryer reaches the desired temperature before you add your food. This helps achieve more even cooking and consistent results. Especially important for frozen ingredients and baked goods (that you won’t flip!).
- For large foods: When cooking larger pieces of chicken or meat (like my Air Fryer Roast Beef), a cold air fryer basket means the bottom half of the food will not get much heat for the first part of cooking. Keep in mind that the heat only comes from the top of the gadget, not from the top and bottom (like it would in a regular oven).
Preheating helps ensure the bottom half cooks as well as the top part gets browned. - For super crispy texture: Want that golden-brown sear on your steaks and crispy finish on your fries? Preheating can help achieve it. Foods like chicken wings, chicken tenders, French fries, and other breaded items benefit from preheating the air fryer.
- For recipes with specific instructions: Some air fryer recipes may specify preheating the air fryer as part of the cooking process.

When To Skip Preheating
Times I don’t bother:
- For foods that don’t need to be crispy: If you’re just using your air fryer for cut down on cooking time.
- Reheating leftovers: If you’re reheating small portions of other leftovers, you may choose to skip preheating.

These foods might cook more evenly without preheating the air fryer.
Common Mistakes When Preheating an Air Fryer
- Preheating for Too Long: Over-preheating can cause the air fryer to become too hot, leading to burned food or uneven cooking. Stick to the 3-5 minute window unless your recipe states otherwise.
- Lining the Basket During Preheat: Adding parchment paper or liners before preheating is a mistake. Without the weight of food, the hot air can blow the parchment into the heating element, potentially causing it to burn.
