Chocolate Strawberry Yogurt Bites ingredients

Ingredients

Here are the simple ingredients to gather up:

  • Plain Greek yogurt or Blended Cottage Cheese (just puree cottage cheese in the blender!).
  • Maple syrup: Adds natural sweetness to the yogurt. The amount can be adjusted based on how sweet you like the bites.
  • Finely-chopped strawberries: Fresh strawberries add a burst of fruity flavor and a yummy texture. Finely chopping them ensures they are evenly distributed throughout the yogurt mixture.
  • Dark chocolate chips: Used for coating the frozen yogurt bites, giving the bites a rich, slightly bitter contrast to the sweet yogurt and strawberries. Dark chocolate goes perfectly with the tartness of the yogurt and the sweetness of the strawberries.
  • Coconut oil: Mixed with the dark chocolate chips to help them melt smoothly and achieve a glossy finish. It also helps the chocolate coating set firmly when frozen.

Substitutions and Variations

Here are a couple of swaps you can make:

  • Greek yogurt: You can substitute any type of plain or flavored yogurt. Vanilla yogurt is delicious, too! For a dairy-free option, use coconut, almond, or soy yogurt. Just make sure it’s thick.
  • Maple syrup: Honey, agave nectar, or any liquid sweetener can be used as an alternative to maple syrup. Adjust the amount to taste.
  • Strawberries: Swap with fresh or frozen berries such as blueberries, raspberries, or chopped cherries. Diced mango, peaches, or kiwi are yummy, too.
  • Dark chocolate chips: If you prefer a sweeter coating, use milk chocolate, white chocolate, or semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  • Flavor additions: For extra flavor, add a splash of vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon to the yogurt mixture. A sprinkle of sea salt on the chocolate coating is a grown-up touch.
  • Superfood boost: Add chia seeds, flaxseeds, or hemp seeds to the yogurt mixture.

Final Notes, Pro Tips + Science-Based Secrets

As a food scientist, I love sharing my tips, tricks, and knowledge with you:

  • Use thick Greek yogurt: Go for thick Greek yogurt to ensure the yogurt bites hold their shape well when frozen. If the yogurt is too thin, the bites may become too soft and mushy.
  • Thoroughly dry the strawberries: Properly pat the chopped strawberries dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps prevent the yogurt mixture from becoming too watery.
  • Re-warm the chocolate: The melted chocolate mixture will cool slightly while dipping the frozen yogurt clusters. As it thickens up, it’ll make a lumpier, thicker coating. Microwave it as needed for 30 seconds on 50% power to rewarm it and ensure a thin, smooth and even coating.

FAQs About Frozen Strawberry Yogurt Bites

Just skimming through? Don’t miss these Q&As:

Can I use frozen strawberries instead of fresh?

Yes, frozen strawberries can be used instead of fresh. Just be sure to thaw and drain them well before chopping and mixing with the yogurt to prevent excess moisture in the mixture.

How long do these yogurt bites last in the freezer?

These yogurt bites can be stored in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2-3 weeks. However, for the best taste and texture, I recommend eating them within the first week.

Can I use flavored yogurt instead of plain Greek yogurt?

Yes, flavoured yoghurt can be used if preferred. Just keep in mind that flavoured yoghurt may contain added sugars, which could affect the overall sweetness of the bites. Adjust the amount of maple syrup accordingly to balance the sweetness.

Can I make these yogurt bites without chocolate?

Yes! While the chocolate coating adds a delicious layer of flavour, you can leave it out if you like. Simply freeze the yogurt and strawberry mixture in clusters without dipping them in chocolate.

Can I use other fruits instead of strawberries?

Yes, you can use other fruits such as blueberries, raspberries, or chopped cherries. Just be sure to adjust the sweetness level accordingly, as some fruits may be sweeter or more tart than strawberries.

Are these yogurt bites suitable for a dairy-free diet?

Yes, you can use dairy-free yoghurt alternatives such as coconut, almond, or soy yoghurt to make these bites dairy-free. Just make sure the yoghurt has a thick consistency similar to Greek yoghurt for best results.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Plain Greek yogurt or blended cottage cheese
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • ½ cup finely-chopped strawberries
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil

Instructions

  • Prepare Yogurt Mixture: In a bowl, mix Greek yogurt (or cottage cheese) and maple syrup until well combined.
  • Add Strawberries: Gently fold in the chopped strawberries until evenly distributed.
  • Shape Clusters: Spoon small clusters of the yogurt-strawberry mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Freeze 1-2 hours until solid.
  • Melt Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine dark chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring each time, until smooth.
  • Dip Clusters: Remove frozen yogurt clusters from the freezer. Dip each one into the melted chocolate, ensuring they are fully coated.
  • Final Freeze: Place the coated clusters back on the parchment-lined sheet and freeze for another hour or until the chocolate is set.

Notes

Strawberry preparation: Thoroughly pat dry the finely chopped strawberries with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This prevents the yogurt mixture from becoming too watery and helps maintain a creamy texture.
Chocolate coating: Allow the melted chocolate mixture to cool slightly before dipping the frozen yogurt clusters. This helps prevent the chocolate from melting the yogurt and ensures a smooth and even coating. Work quickly when dipping the clusters to prevent the yogurt from thawing too much.
Freezing time: Make sure the yogurt clusters are fully frozen before dipping them in the melted chocolate. This helps the chocolate coating set quickly and prevents it from sliding off the yogurt clusters. Allow the chocolate-coated clusters to freeze for an additional hour or until the chocolate is fully set before serving.
Storage: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer.

Tried these strawberry frozen yogurt bites and they were amazing! So refreshing. Do you have any other fruit combinations that work well with this recipe?

    1. Jennifer Pallian BSc, RD says:

Any fruit you like could be swapped in as long as it is chopped in small pieces! Mango is great (I like it with white chocolate instead of dark) and raspberry is a favorite.
