Rice Measurement Chart: Single Serving

Here’s my quick answer (based on standard rice) for the right amount of rice for 1 person:

How Much Rice to Serve 1 Person as a Side?

  • 1/4 cup (45 grams) of uncooked rice typically serves 1 person as a side dish.
  • This measurement yields around 3/4 cup (150 grams) of cooked rice.

How Much Rice to Serve 1 Person as a Main?

  • 1/2 cup (90 grams) of uncooked rice generally serves 1 person as a main course.
  • This amount yields approximately 1 1/2 cups (300 grams) of cooked rice.

Different Types Of Rice + Their Portion Sizes

Rice is among the most widely consumed. It comes in many varieties, each with distinct flavors, textures, and uses in the kitchen.

Here are some common types of rice found worldwide, along with serving suggestions for both main courses and sides:

  • White rice: This medium grain is milled to remove its husk, bran, and germ.  It is a polished grain with the perfect amount of fluff! For a main course, serve about 1 cup of cooked white rice per person. As a side dish, allocate around 1/2 cup serving of rice per person.
  • Brown rice: Retaining its bran and germ layers, brown rice offers a chewier texture and nuttier flavor than white rice. As it is more nutritious, consider serving around 3/4 cup of cooked brown rice per person for a main course and 1/3 cup rice as a side dish.
  • Basmati rice: Renowned for its fragrant aroma and elongated grains, Basmati rice enriches Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. Allow approximately 1 cup of cooked Basmati rice per person for a main dish and 1/2 cup as a side.
  • Jasmine rice: This medium grain rice has a delicate floral scent and sticky texture, complements certain Asian dishes. Offer roughly 1 cup of cooked Jasmine rice per person as a main course and 1/2 cup as a side.
  • Arborio rice: A staple in Italian cuisine, Arborio rice’s high starch content is great for adding creaminess to risotto. Provide around 1/2 cup of uncooked Arborio rice per person for a main dish and 1/4 cup as a side.
  • Sushi rice: Sticky and slightly sweet, sushi rice forms the basis of Japanese recipes. Allocate approximately 1 cup of cooked sushi rice per person for a main course and 1/2 cup as a side.
  • Wild rice: Despite its name, wild rice isn’t technically rice but offers a chewy texture and nutty flavor. Mix approximately 1/2 cup of cooked wild rice per person with other rice types for a main course and 1/4 cup as a side.
  • Black rice: Also known as forbidden rice, black rice boasts a dark hue and nutty taste. Consider using 1/2 cup of cooked black rice per person in salads, stir-fries, or desserts.

Is Rice Part of a Healthy Diet?

Yes, as a registered dietitian I assure you that rice can be included in a healthy diet.

Keep in mind that whole grain options, like brown rice, have a lower glycemic index. That means they are digested more gradually, resulting in a gentler change in blood sugar levels.

According to Harvard, a meta-analysis found a 55% higher risk of type 2 diabetes in Asian populations with the highest white rice intake. Another study found a 32% lower risk with high whole grain intake, including brown rice.

My takeaway is that all rice fits, but variety (including whole grains) and portion sizes matter.

What to Do With Leftover Rice

Leftover rice can be transformed into delicious dishes (rice salad, stuffed peppers or tomatoes, fried rice, rice balls etc.) with just a bit of creativity.

  5. Make a bowl: Start with Air Fryer Tuna, Honey-Teriyaki Salmon, or Chili Garlic Tofu and pile on the yummy toppings: think spicy mayo, edamame, sliced cucumber, julienned carrots, etc.
  6. Chicken and Broccoli Rice casserole: Mix leftover rice with cooked chicken, broccoli, and a creamy sauce to make a flavorful chicken broccoli casserole. Bake until bubbly and golden for a comforting and satisfying meal.
  7. Rice stir-fry: Use leftover rice as a base for stir-fries. Sauté vegetables, protein, and my favorite easy stir fry sauce in a skillet, then add the rice and toss until heated through. Serve hot for a quick and easy meal.

What is the recommended serving size of rice per person?

A general guideline suggests serving about 1/2 to 1 cup of cooked rice per person for a main course.

How do I determine the amount of rice to cook for a group of people?

To determine the amount of rice to cook for a group, consider the number of servings needed and multiply it by the recommended serving size per person.

For example, if serving 8 people and aiming for 1/2 cup of rice per person, you would need 4 cups of uncooked rice.

Is there a difference in serving size between different types of rice?

Yes, the serving size may vary slightly depending on the type of rice being served. For example, varieties like Basmati rice or Jasmine rice may be served in larger quantities due to their longer grains and lighter texture compared to short-grain rice varieties.

Can I adjust the serving size of rice based on dietary preferences or specific occasions?

Absolutely. The serving size of rice can be adjusted based on individual dietary preferences, cultural customs, or the nature of the meal.

What if I have leftover rice? How can I store it properly?

Leftover rice can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. To reheat, sprinkle the rice with a bit of water and microwave it until heated through.

Alternatively, you can use leftover rice to create delicious dishes like fried rice, rice salads, or rice pudding.
