Here’s why this is my new favorite way to cook pasta:

  • I find it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the Instant Pot like it can on the stovetop.
  • Quick as a flash – set and forget my friends!
  • Perfect taste and al dente pasta texture with this method – zero risk of mush!

Here’s What You Need

Grab these basics and get going straight away:

Ingredients

Grab your favorite pasta and a few other bits for the Instant Pot:

Instant Pot Pasta Ingredients
  • Pasta: You can choose any short pasta shape, like penne, rigatoni, rotini, oz pasta, or elbow macaroni. Spaghetti and other long noodles can be used, too; just break it in half. You can even use whole wheat pasta!
  • Salt: Seasoning is key! Salt enhances the flavor of the pasta as it cooks.
  • Butter or olive oil: A tablespoon of butter or olive oil prevents foaming and sticking, making it a must-have ingredient in this recipe.

Substitutions and Variations

If you need to use different types of pasta, that’s no problem:

  • Pasta type: Try using gluten-free pasta or whole-wheat pasta for a healthier alternative.
  • Butter vs. olive oil: Swap butter for a dairy-free oil like coconut or avocado oil for a vegan-friendly option.

Tools to Grab

You’ll just need your Instant Pot or pressure cooker and a pair of tongs.

How to Make Instant Pot Pasta: An Easy Guide

Follow these simple steps for the perfect Instant Pot pasta every time:

Add pasta and liquid

Place the pasta into the Instant Pot in an even layer. Add enough cups of water or broth to cover the pasta. Adjust the liquid as needed.

Season and prevent foaming

Add salt and stir in butter or oil to prevent foaming and sticking.

Set pressure cooking time

Take the pasta package cook time, divide by two, then subtract one minute. For delicate pasta like angel hair, just cook for 1-2 minutes.

Pressure cook and quick-release

Close the lid, set the valve to “Sealing,” and cook on High Pressure. Once the time is up, do a Quick Release by turning the valve to “Venting.”

Stir and adjust

If there’s any excess liquid, let the pasta rest for a minute to absorb it. Use the Sauté mode for 1-2 minutes if you need to evaporate any remaining water.

5 Common Mistakes When Making Instant Pot Pasta

Here are some typical trip-ups that can easily be avoided:

  1. Overfilling the Instant Pot: Don’t fill the pot past the halfway mark to prevent foaming and ensure proper cooking.
  2. Using too much liquid: If you add too much liquid, your pasta could end up too soggy. Adjust based on the pasta you’re using.
  3. Skipping the quick release: Always do a Quick Release to avoid overcooking and clumping.
  4. Not stirring the pasta: To prevent pasta from sticking, make sure to stir in a bit of butter or oil after cooking.
  5. Cooking pasta for too long: Follow the timing rule (half the package cook time minus 1 minute) to avoid overcooked pasta.

Make Ahead and Storage

You can cook the pasta ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.

  • Reheat leftovers with a splash of water or broth to restore moisture.
  • Store leftover pasta in an airtight container.
  • If the pasta has absorbed too much liquid, add a little bit of water or sauce when reheating.

How to Serve this Instant Pot Pasta recipe

This Instant Pot pasta can be served as a side dish or paired with your favorite pasta sauce—think my beet pasta sauceAlfredo Sauce, marinara sauce, or pesto. It’s also great with a good old sauce jar!

  • Make a quick meat sauce with a pound of ground beef for an easy dinner.
  • Top Instant Pot spaghetti with freshly grated parmesan cheese, or add veggies roasted in Italian seasoning and some protein to make it a complete meal.
  • You can also add a protein such as grilled chicken or shrimp for a full dinner.

Final Notes, Pro Tips + Science-Based Secrets

The Instant Pot’s pressure-cooking feature helps the pasta cook quickly and evenly, trapping steam to ensure the pasta is perfectly tender without boiling over.

  • Heat the sauce separately: If you’re cooking pasta with sauce, it’s better to cook the pasta separately and mix it with the sauce after. This helps avoid a too-thick or sticky sauce.
  • Stir before cooking: Before closing the Instant Pot lid, give the pasta a gentle stir to make sure it’s well-distributed. This will prevent it from sticking together as it cooks.
  • Double the recipe for larger groups: You can double or even triple this recipe; make sure to check the fill line in the Instant Pot. As a general rule, don’t exceed two-thirds of the pot’s capacity to make sure there’s enough space for the pressure to build and for the pasta to cook evenly.

FAQs About Instant Pot Pasta

Just whizzing through? These are some common queries I get:

Can I use gluten-free pasta?

Yes! Just be cautious, as gluten-free pasta may cook faster than traditional pasta.

What if I don’t have an Instant Pot?

You can cook pasta on the stove, but this recipe is optimized for the Instant Pot’s pressure cooking function.

How do I make pasta al dente in the Instant Pot?

Make sure to follow the suggested cooking time for your pasta, and don’t forget to do a quick release to stop the cooking process.

Instant Pot Pasta (Easy, Foolproof Method!)

Instant Pot pasta is a game changer for easy, hands-off meals. If you measure correctly, there is no waiting for water to boil, no stirring, and no draining.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 7 minutes
Total Time: 12 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 lb pasta any short shape or spaghetti broken in half
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp butter or olive oil optional, helps prevent foaming

Instructions

Add Pasta & Liquid

  • Place the pasta in the Instant Pot in an even layer.
  • Add water or broth. The liquid should just cover the pasta—adjust as needed.

Season & Prevent Foaming

  • Add salt.
  • Stir in butter or oil to reduce foaming and prevent sticking.

Set Pressure Cooking Time

  • Take the package cook time, divide by 2, then subtract 1 minute (e.g., if the box says 10 minutes, set the Instant Pot for 4 minutes).
  • For very delicate pasta like angel hair, just 1-2 minutes under pressure is enough.

Pressure Cook & Quick Release

  • Close the lid, set the valve to “Sealing,” and select High Pressure for the calculated time.
  • Once the time is up, do a manual Quick Release (turn the valve to “Venting” immediately).

Stir & Adjust

  • If there’s excess liquid, let the pasta sit for a minute—it will absorb some liquid as it releases the remaining pressure.
  • If needed, turn on Sauté mode and stir for 1-2 minutes until any remaining water evaporates.

Notes

Tips for Success
  • Avoid Overfilling – Never fill the Instant Pot past the halfway mark when cooking pasta (it foams as it cooks).
  • Prevent Sticking – If cooking long pasta, crisscross it in layers instead of stacking in a single direction.
