Homemade chocolate fudge sauce takes ice cream, brownies, or your favourite spoon to a whole new level of deliciousness.

Warm and gooey.

The best possible way chocolate can behave.

This homemade chocolate sauce has been made so often, and is so very loved, that I’m shocked it has not yet made an appearance.

Microwave Hot Fudge Sauce

My homemade chocolate sauce recipe is made in the microwave. But you could make it on the stove if you prefer.

Either way, watch it closely and stir often.

Stirring the cocoa, cream and sugar

Unless you enjoy scraping chocolate from all your kitchen crevasses.

Because boiling cream + sugar = sticky volcano.

Keep on stirring the Chocolate Hot Fudge mixture

How To Make Chocolate Sauce with Cocoa Powder

To make chocolate with sauce with cocoa powder, you simply mix sugar, cocoa powder and heavy cream, and stir and heat until combined. Butter is then added for richness, along with a dash of vanilla and pinch of salt to bring the fudge-y flavour together.

Many hot fudge recipes call for melted chocolate and corn syrup.

I find the cocoa powder-based version has a thicker texture and better flavour.

Cook the Chocolate Hot Fudge in a microwave

As it cools, it becomes almost chewy. And you don’t have to worry about tempering chocolate or having it seize. Easy peasy.

Also, you wanna talk about making a killer ice cream cake? Just spread a layer of softened ice cream in the bottom of a springform pan. Freeze. Make cocoa hot fudge sauce, cool slightly, and spread on frozen ice cream layer. Top with crushed chocolate wafers and another layer of softened ice cream, in a complementing flavour. Freeze again.

Or just pour it all over chocolate and bananas.

I have 1 question. The recipe shows 8servings. How much is 1 serving? Is nutritional information for an individual serving or the 8?

    1. Jennifer Pallian BSc, RD says:

Oh my goodness, Roberta, I’m so glad you pointed that out! It was showing servings for all 8 portions as one serving. Hilarious! Imagine a 1250 calorie hot fudge sauce serving. It’s all fixed now, really happy you took the time to comment. xoxo

I made this with Dutch processed cocoa powder and it’s the best hot fudge sauce I’ve ever had! It tastes like brownie batter and it beautifully dark. I’ve been trying to make more things at home I’d ordinarily buy to get rid of unnecessary and unhealthy ingredients. I’ll absolutely keep this recipe and use it from now on!

I’m currently out of town. But I’m trying to find a recipe for hot fudge sauce like I make at home. After reviewing several recipes, this seems to be the closest. I plan to double check when i get home, because an ice-cream parlor here in town said they threw theirs away last week because it was too grainy. I have to chuckle, because their specialty is fudge!

    1. Jennifer Pallian BSc, RD says:

Hope you enjoy it, Deborah! It’s a tried-and-true recipe that I’ve made a hundred times. Definitely not grainy 🙂
